Asperger’s disease, is otherwise known as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Children affected with Asperger’s disease usually display symptoms such as clumsiness, or displaying uncoordinated behavior, as this illness has developmental delays in motor skills. Other characteristics may include repetitive rituals or routines, and the inability to engage or interact with peers. This disease differs from classic autism, in which children have problems with communication. Those with Asperger’s generally have a high vocabulary influx.
Children affected by Asperger’s disease often become enthralled or fixated on a certain particular topic. They became nearly obsessed in learning as much as they can about this idea, and will usually not converse about anything else. Regular conversation becomes impossible, and because of this characteristic, these children are unfortunately isolated due to their lack of social skills and narrow interests.
At this time, the cause of Asperger’s syndrome in unknown, but it is likely that genetics and environmental factors both play a part. Researchers are currently conducting studies with groups of children affected, and are analyzing their DNA to learn more. Currently, treatments for the Asperger’s disease include behavioral therapy, social skills training, and a medication can be prescribed in some cases.
